More information

Often described as the only thornless rose, though many other thornless cultivars exist, Zephirine Drouhin is widely known and commonly grown. Its blooms are bright cherry-pink, loosely formed, with white streaks at the center. Flowers appear singly or in small clusters (usually 3–5), and in very large quantities—Zephirine Drouhin starts flowering early and is among the last to finish in autumn, with near-continuous bloom. The fragrance is strong and sweet. The plant is vigorous, with smooth crimson canes, red young growth, and matte green foliage. The cultivar is disease-prone. It can be trained as a shrub, a low climber, or as a wall rose.

Classified among variegated roses. Blooms are borne in quantity on the plant. Thornless. Susceptible to powdery mildew.

A tall-growing cultivar frequently trained as a climbing rose. The flat, semi-double flowers are bright raspberry-pink and produced in large numbers. It reaches about 3 metres in height and 1.8 metres in width. Flowering is prolonged and nearly continuous. Susceptible to powdery mildew. Planting on a free-standing support rather than against a wall helps reduce outbreaks.

A Bourbon rose suitable for cultivation in the south. The young shoots are burgundy, and the canes are thornless. Allow approximately two years for establishment before abundant growth and flowering. Disease resistance is average. (Oliver)

This old climbing Bourbon rose is thornless, and the smooth canes are easy to tie. On a support it grows up to 4 metres in length. The leaves are matte, yellow-green, with a reddish blush. Clusters of bright pink flowers form in small groups on the lateral shoots. The blooms are semi-double, cup-shaped, and fragrant, with a light fresh, sweet scent. Susceptible to black spot.

This Bourbon rose is frequently cited among variegated roses; the canes are virtually thornless, and the bright, scented flowers are characteristic. Elongated buds open to semi-double or double, loose, cup-shaped flowers, 9–10 cm across. Strawberry-pink petals are white at the base, with a tuft of golden stamens in the center. Flowers appear singly or in clusters, with a rich rose-oil fragrance and fruity notes. Usually blooms abundantly in early summer; in warm climates it can bloom again in autumn. Individual flowers appear through summer. It may take a few years to establish before heavy flowering. In cold climates the height is usually under 2 metres, while in hot regions shoots can reach up to 5 metres. The smooth canes suit arches, pergolas, and other supports. Choose a site with good air circulation. Disease resistance is average; prevention for black spot, powdery mildew, and rust is recommended.
