More information

This large, single-flowered rambler arose spontaneously in the garden of Sir Frederick Stern, a British banker. He named the rose Wedding Day, as it first bloomed on 26 June, his wedding anniversary. It is regarded as a hybrid of Rosa mulliganii var. sinowilsonii and Rosa moyesii, though the contribution of the latter is hard to determine. Wedding Day blooms open from pale apricot buds; they are creamy white and then fade to pure white. Flowers appear in clusters of 20–40. As they age, the petals develop pink speckling. The plant is prickly, with dark foliage and long juvenile shoots. Polyantha grandiflora is cultivated under this name in some regions.

Giant rambler, requiring a tall tree for support. In summer, clusters of small creamy white flowers with a citrus scent and yellow stamens at the centre open.

The only seedling of Rosa sinowilsonii, discovered by Sir Frederick Stern in 1950 in the UK. Delicate yellow buds open into small, citrus-scented, single (unbranched) flowers. Once open, they quickly fade to lemon and then to milky white, with a prominent bundle of golden stamens in the centre. The foliage is fairly sparse. The plant can reach 10 m if allowed to climb a tree.

Blooms in very large clusters of fragrant, single white flowers with orange-yellow stamens. The foliage is bright green and glossy. Produces a good crop of small yellow hips in autumn. Tolerates partial shade.
