More information

Veilchenblau is a purple rambler with flowers that open reddish‑purple, then lose the red tones to become dark blue‑purple, and shortly before fading turn grey‑purple, especially in hot weather. Blooms persist on the plant, so multiple shades are visible at once. Most flowers show broad white streaks in the center. They are borne in clusters of 10–30, and small orange hips may develop in autumn. Shoots are thick and thornless. The plant is vigorous, roots readily from cuttings (used as a rootstock), grows in very cold as well as very hot conditions, and is shade tolerant.

Also referred to as a “blue rose”; the actual color is purple with white streaks and a white center. Large clusters are initially dark, then fade to light lilac and last a long time. Shoots are virtually thornless, and it flowers in semi‑shade. (Oliver)

A strong‑growing climbing rose with nearly thornless shoots, this is a hybrid of Rosa multiflora. Young foliage is light green, later becoming glossy, pure green. In June–July it produces lush clusters of almost scentless, semi‑double flowers a little over 2.5 cm in diameter. The coloration is purple with white striping. The variety is hardy and suitable for partial shade, though flowering there will be shorter and less abundant.

Veilchenblau is a progenitor of many “blue” roses. It is very winter‑hardy, also performs in hot climates, and is quite shade tolerant. It propagates easily from cuttings. Flowers are small (3.5 cm), semi‑double, and produced in very large clusters. In heat, blooms scorch and turn lilac‑grey. The sweet scent has been compared to lily of the valley and apples.

This rose tolerates semi‑shade, and its coloration is noted to be strongest in shade. In full sun, reddish‑purple buds open to small, semi‑double purple‑violet flowers with white streaks and golden stamens in the center. The fragrance has also been compared to orange. Growth is vigorous. Provide good air circulation to reduce the risk of powdery mildew.
