More information
Variegata di Bologna is long-cultivated. It bears soft pink blooms with crimson‑purple stripes and spots; in heat the striping becomes paler, while the base color remains soft pink. It is regarded as a sport of Victor Emmanuel, a purple rose. The blooms are very full (densely petalled), cup‑shaped, sometimes flattened. They appear in tight clusters (short‑pediceled), 3–5 per cluster, and may rot in wet weather. Foliage is abundant, large, thin, bright green, and somewhat susceptible to black spot. The plant is vigorous, producing many long shoots that are best tied to keep the bush tidy. The blooms are suitable for dried bouquets. At times, part of the bush can revert to the original purple form. After the first profuse bloom, individual flowers continue to appear.
