More information
Locally, this rose is known as the Valaam rose, linked to the Valaam Monastery on Valaam Island. It is widely recognized along the Finland–Russia border and is often found in Finland.
Semi-marginal, red-raspberry flowers with a bright yellow cluster of stamens. The bush is densely foliated, with medium-green, leathery leaves.
The rose was introduced to the Duchy of Finland in the Middle Ages from Sweden proper under the name vallmoros, poppy rose (vallmo = poppy), due to the flowers’ resemblance to poppies. In Finland, the name shifted to valamoros, and through everyday speech it became the Valaam rose, valamonruusu.
