More information

Tuscany Superb is regarded as a sport or seedling of Tuscany. It is an early Gallic rose. The color is a very rich, brownish dark crimson that darkens with age, becoming deep purple with black-velvet highlights. The shrub reaches 120 cm, taller in mild climates. Like other Gallic roses, it spreads by suckers when grown on its own roots. The foliage shows resistance to black spot but may be affected by powdery mildew after flowering. Winter-hardy to zone 4. Orange fruits appear in autumn.

Tuscany Superb forms a low bush that produces numerous stolons, each bearing flowers with a velvety appearance. The petals are soft-looking and purple, and they carry a light fragrance. Reported among the most winter-hardy of the old Gallic roses and among the oldest.

Flowers up to 7.5 cm in diameter range in color from deep crimson to brownish-purple. The foliage is bright green. Severe frost damage may occur without shelter (less winter-hardy than other Gallic roses).

This old rose has larger leaves and flowers than its progenitor. The flowers are semi-double, brownish-purple, with golden stamens. The bush is erect, medium-sized, with fine dark green foliage. It produces abundant root growth when on its own roots or when the grafting point is buried.
