More information

Tradescant blooms are the smallest among red varieties. They appear in clusters on a spreading shrub with arching shoots. The flowers are well-formed, a rich wine-red that gradually deepens to very dark purple. The plant is low, with limited vigor; the shrub is often sparse. It responds well to increased fertiliser applications. Strong fragrance.

The variety is weak-growing. The blooms are the darkest among Austin roses; the hue is less visible at dusk, so placement affects visibility. Petals are redder at the edges, turning purplish over time. Flowers are slightly cupped with wavy petals, sometimes flat; later they become flat. They appear in clusters, usually 5-10, on a shrub with arching shoots. The foliage is medium-sized, dark green, sometimes prone to black spot; disease resistance improves with good feeding. The color range includes black and crimson tones.

Clusters of 4-10 flowers are slightly cupped at first and later become flat. Initially very dark red, then black-purple. The blooms have a velvety texture.

The shrub is tall, narrow, with thick, stiff shoots. Shoots can fall apart. It does not bloom very readily. The foliage shows good disease resistance. (Oliver)

Tradescant flowers are medium-sized, almost flat, in small clusters. They are dense wine-red or purple, full, often flattened. The fragrance is strong; flowering continues through summer and autumn. Suitable for the front of borders. The shrub is low, spreading, with drooping shoots. In hot climates the shoots can become long enough for the variety to be used as a climbing rose.
