More information

The Pilgrim is an English yellow rose with soft yellow, rosette-shaped blooms composed of numerous small petals. Inner petals are pure yellow, while the outer petals are almost white. The plant is hardy, vigorous, and repeat-flowering. The bush is erect, with glossy foliage.

This cultivar was not an accidental seedling. It was produced by crossing Graham Thomas with Yellow Button. This cross was difficult to achieve because Yellow Button produces very little pollen and does not set seed. Pollen was collected from hundreds of plants to obtain enough for the cross. Early results did not meet the breeding aims, after which a selection appeared that fulfilled the objective.

For many years it was grown as a medium-sized shrub, and it also performs when used as a braided rose. Low shrubs can be trained on a support as a pleached rose; The Pilgrim reaches up to 3 metres when grown on a support. The flowers are medium to large, open rosette-shaped, delicate yellow, slightly paler at the edges. The scent combines tea rose and myrrh notes. The foliage is abundant and soft in texture. As a shrub, the variety can be kept quite short. Towards the end of the season it may produce long shoots that should be shortened to maintain the bush shape.

The soft-textured flowers are formed by rows of swirling small petals that create a flat bloom, with richer yellow tones in the centre that gradually fade to creamy yellow. Flowers are borne in clusters on strong shoots, are fragrant, and bloom through summer and autumn. Suitable for planting in a mixed border, as a single bush, or in a group. The bush has a vigorous, compact habit, medium height, and dense foliage. Leaves are glossy, bright green.
