More information

The Mayflower is an English Rose developed after the first repeat-flowering types of the early 1970s. It combines the characteristic flower form and bush habit of English Roses and shows very high disease resistance. The flowers are small to medium-sized, rosette-shaped, with petals that turn down at the edges, and have a strong rose-oil scent. The bush is well-branched and produces new buds vigorously throughout the summer. In Britain it starts flowering very early—often by the end of May—long before many other English Roses, and it is rarely without blooms until the first frost. Young foliage is light green with a bronze tint, later darkening to a matte finish. It initially forms a small bush, gradually reaching medium size. Some blooms may fail to open fully, possibly due to limited vigor. In hot climates, spider mite damage is possible.

The Mayflower was introduced in 2001, with rosette-shaped pure pink blooms, intense fragrance, and strong health. The variety remained stable until 5 or 6 years ago, when a shoot with pure white flowers appeared, producing the cultivar Susan Williams-Ellis. Both roses are noted for complete disease resistance and very early flowering: in the UK they begin at the end of May and continue almost without interruption until the first frost. High frost resistance is also recorded, relevant for growers in colder regions. White sports are rare in breeding, making this form notable. The fragrance is rich and classic (rose oil). The variety is suitable for borders, hedges, and container planting, and presents a compact, “vintage” style. It is named in honor of the designer.
