More information

The mid-20's was the peak of popularity for tea-hybrid roses. Sutter's Gold is a cultivar from that period that remains widely grown. The flowers are a dense golden yellow, fading to lemon yellow. They open from red buds and retain red spots on the underside of the outer petals, though the red often fades to pink. Sometimes, especially in heat, the red intensifies; color variation occurs. The buds are long and slender, and in dry weather the petals curl into triangles. Flowers appear almost always singly, on a strong, fast-growing bush. It blooms very early, often among the first of the tea-hybrid roses. The foliage is dark green, fairly disease-resistant, and the bush is very prickly. Grown in many climates. With good care, flowers can reach 16 cm. In poor conditions, the flowers are less double, but the bush still blooms. There is a pleached variety bred by Wicks in 1954 .

A 1950s rose. Bred from Charlotte Armstrong, a cultivar with long, slender buds. Sutter's Gold inherited the parent’s bud and flower form. The coloring is golden orange, with a red patina. The buds open into rather loose flowers of 30 petals, large and fragrant. The bloom opens very quickly in heat. The foliage is dark green and leathery; the bush is erect and strong. The variety has won many awards and remains popular in many countries.
