More information

Karl Hetzel introduced Super Excelsa as an improved form of the popular winter-hardy old variety Excelsa. It was among his first hybrids to receive the ADR certificate; the variety is more disease resistant than Excelsa and is repeat-flowering. It bears large clusters of densely filled, bright crimson flowers with a white centre. The blooms fade to purple, and the petal reverses take on a silvery pink tone. The variety is not as strong-growing as Excelsa and can hardly be called a climber, but flowers continue through the summer after the first, very abundant bloom. The foliage is dark, in the manner of Wichurana hybrids, and the bush is spreading. Suited for obelisks and low supports, also usable as a ground cover rose, and on a high weeping bast. The variety is very hardy and also grows well in hot climates.
