More information
Rich raspberry notes with a classic rose scent characterize Souvenir du Docteur Jamain. The blooms are very dark red, with black, velvety markings on the upper side of the petals that create a crimson cast. White streaks may appear on the inner petals, emphasizing the deep coloration. Golden stamens in the center produce a similar effect. The bush has a lax habit; the shoots are almost thornless, flexible, and easy to tie to a support—like plumeria roses—or to bend and pin so they flower along their entire length. The foliage emerges bronze, later turns green, and is susceptible to disease. It grows better in hot, dry climates and is responsive to care.
The flowers are fragrant, dark wine-colored with purple tones. The petals are dense, with edges that are almost black. The bush is tall and can be trained to twist along a wall, but avoid planting in open sun because the flowers can burn. It responds to heavy feeding, which supports good growth and abundant repeat flowering.
