Garden roses can exhibit bud mutations of interest to breeders. In 1980, rooted cuttings of the variety "Norita" were planted at the site. One bush differed from the parent by more intensely colored petals, elongated light green leaves, and straight annual shoots. Cuttings were taken from this plant and rooted. In the progeny, all noted changes were repeated. In 1982, 30 cuttings of the selected mutant were planted. At a presentation by the District Society for Nature Conservation and the Inspectorate for Variety Testing of Agricultural Crops of the Crimean region, the new rose, named after Sofia Rotaru, People's Artist of the Ukrainian and Moldavian SSR, was exhibited at the All-Union Exhibition of Economic Achievements of the USSR, where it received a score of 9.8 points. It was recommended for testing at the Crimean state cultivation centre.
The rose "Sofia Rotaru" is classified as a Hybrid Tea. Buds are almost black and open slowly. Flowers measure 10–12 cm in diameter, are velvety black-red, do not fade in the sun, and are very densely petalled (over 40 petals), borne on long, strong shoots. The fragrance is weak. Flowering is abundant and prolonged. The bush is tall; leaves are leathery, healthy, and resistant to fungal diseases. The variety is recommended for cutting and for floral design.
