More information
Sally Holmes, named for the breeder’s wife, resulted from an amateur cross between Ballerina and the floribunda Ivory Fashion. As with Ballerina, the flowers appear in very large sprays, while their size and diameter are comparable to Ivory Fashion. Although bred in the UK, Sally Holmes performs more strongly in hot climates, reaching about 4 m on a support and around 2 m as a dense, free-standing shrub. Buds open creamy with a rose-tinted hue and long golden stamens; the stamens soon turn brown and the petals become white. In rainy weather the blooms may show pink speckles; in both heat and rain the flowers persist for extended periods. Inflorescences form on long shoots, typically bearing 10–40 blooms per cluster. In windy locations, shoots should be tied to prevent breakage at the base. The foliage is medium-green and slightly glossy. The cultivar repeat-blooms quickly. It shows disease resistance, though black spot can cause damage.
Coloration is dominated by cream and honey tones that may fade to white with age. The transition to white occurs without distortion of the original coloration. The cultivar is hardy and generally healthy; in the coldest regions it requires protection. Fragrance is light and cool; individual blooms are almost scentless, while collectively they produce a perceptible scent. Large cyst-shaped inflorescences can carry up to 40 buds. The plant is heavily furnished with inflorescences, and at full bloom the display is dominated by flowers. Blooms in each inflorescence open sequentially, extending the flowering period; flowering repeats at the end of the season. Bushes are large and strong, with branches capable of holding numerous blooms; the lower portion can appear sparsely branched. Leaves are slightly glossy and medium green. The cultivar shows disease resistance but may be affected by powdery mildew late in the season. Suitable for mixed borders, hedges, and single plantings.
