Originally bred as a groundcover rose, it is commonly classified as a plaited rose. It shows traits of Kordesii hybrids: winter hardiness, disease resistance, and vivid flower color. The blooms are single, luminous red, with a white spot at the base of the petals. They appear in clusters of 5–25, followed by scarlet hips; Rote Max Graf blooms once. The foliage is dark green, glossy, and small. The shrub is very thorny, spreading, with arching shoots. Shoots that touch the ground root easily.
