More information

A fragrant old rose, a Gallica hybrid. Prolonged once-blooming. Large, strongly brushed blooms are medium pink, often brighter, with a button in the center. With age, the color cools and the flowers take on a saucer shape.
Young growth is bright mid-green; mature foliage is medium-sized in an emerald tone. Thorns medium-sized. The shrub is spreading, asymmetrical, produces abundant root growth, and needs either ample space or strict containment. Can be trained on a support, as a plethora.
Resistant to black spot. Tolerates short rains. Origin unknown.

One of the roses found and preserved by enthusiasts of old cultivars (often in abandoned gardens and historic cemeteries, a practice now less frequent).
Although these cultivars have lost their identity, they have been classified as Gallica roses, Gallica hybrids, or hybrids of China roses and Gallica based on botanical characteristics.
They are most often named after the village where they were discovered, since attempting identification without scientific methods (comparative DNA analysis) is considered risky due to the many similar cultivars in this group.
Rose de Montmeillant belongs to the collection assembled by the specialist in antique roses Jean-Claude Nicol (France), who between 1992 and 2002 inventoried and preserved roses found in cemeteries of his native region, the Ardennes. These roses are preserved and can be viewed at the Roseraie du Patrimoine Ardennais in Launois-sur-Vence.
