More information

Rosa omeiensis 'Pteracantha' is a species rose with white or white blend, single blooms of about four petals. The plant is armed with prominent thorns or prickles and typically bears 9 to 13 leaflets per leaf. It reaches approximately 100 to 400 cm in height and up to about 185 cm in width. It is suited for use as a specimen plant and produces decorative hips. The cultivar shows very strong disease resistance. 'Pteracantha', also known as the Wingthorn rose, is a selected garden form of Rosa omeiensis with notably winged prickles and is propagated by cuttings to maintain uniformity of these characteristics. Rosa omeiensis and Rosa sericea each have a 'Pteracantha' form and can be difficult to distinguish; Rosa omeiensis generally grows larger, often up to twice the size of Rosa sericea. The hips of Rosa omeiensis may be deep red or yellow, obovoid or pear-shaped, sometimes two-toned, borne on a fleshy yellow pedicel that arises directly from the cane. Rosa omeiensis usually has 9 to 13 leaflets, but can have between 5 and 17. The native ranges of the two species overlap in mountainous regions, with Rosa omeiensis also occurring at lower elevations.
