R. primula is a species rose with yellow to light yellow, small single flowers, approximately 3.8 cm in diameter, usually borne singly. It has a moderate fragrance and flowers once in spring or summer. The plant grows with an arching, bushy, spreading and upright habit and is armed with thorns or prickles. The foliage is small, glossy, light green and fragrant, typically with 9 to 15 leaflets. It reaches about 215 cm in height and 185 cm in width. It is suitable for USDA zones 4b through 9b and produces decorative hips. The plant belongs to the section Pimpinellifoliae, with solitary blooms without bracts and styles shorter than the stamens. It has doubly serrated, glandular leaflets on the underside and differs from related species by leaflet number, bloom size and hip color.
