More information
There are four Grootendorst roses. The first, from which all the others (which are sports) descend, was bred by an amateur and is listed at Boskop Nursery under the name F.J. Grootendorst & Sons, named in honour of the family’s father. The flowers of F.J. Grootendorst are deep red. Two sports arose from it: Pink Grootengorst in 1923 and the deep red Grootendorst Supreme in 1936. From Pink Grootendorst came another sport, White Grootendorst, in 1962. All of these varieties are identical except for colour, and all of the sports quite often revert (i.e., the colouring of the original variety reappears). These varieties are distinguished from other rugosa roses by their lack of fragrance and by indented petal edges (such indentation is present in only one other rugosa variety, Fimbriata, and in the Chinese rose Serratipetala). The flowers appear in dense clusters, usually 7–15 in number, accompanied by pale green, wrinkled foliage. Thick green shoots and grey-brown branches are very prickly; young growth is heavily lobed. Later the shoots become bare, respond well to pruning, and quickly flower again. Without pruning, they reach 1.75 m, are very winter-hardy, disease-resistant, and flower profusely. Suitable for stand-alone planting or combinations with other flowers, and practical for mixed borders due to the abundance and duration of flowering.
One of the rugosa hybrids with carnation-like flowers. It has no scent. The bush is very prickly, erect, with leathery foliage. Reaches 1.5 m. Blooms abundantly and continuously throughout summer and autumn. A sport from F.J. Grootendorst. Can be cut back to any desired height.
This variety blooms in large clusters of small rosettes with carnation-like, cut-out petals. The flowers are double, pink in colour, and almost odourless. Suitable for small bouquets and long-lasting when cut. Flowers appear on an elongated, prickly bush with small, pale, stiff foliage. In a border it provides colour throughout the season, as the bush is rarely without flowers. Medium in height and disease-resistant.
