More information

This variety expands the colour range of English Roses: bright copper on the inner petal surfaces and pale copper-yellow on the reverse, reminiscent of Australian Copper (R. foetida bicolor). The flowers are large and deeply cupped, showing a two-sided colour contrast across each petal. The shrub’s form is similar to Golden Celebration and Abraham Darby, and the flowers are strongly scented. The breeding programme traditionally focused on softer, cleaner shades; this selection extends the palette to brighter copper tones. In borders dominated by pastels, a strongly coloured rose can serve as a focal accent when used sparingly. In garden evaluations, the cultivar drew consistent attention.

This rose bears notable flowers; cultivation can be demanding, and the blooms often nod.

Two notable parents (Graham Thomas and Abraham Darby) produced this bright orange-copper cultivar. The flowers are large and semi-double. The vivid orange is complemented by a yellow reverse; as the bloom develops, the colour turns pink. The petals curl inward, so the central stamens are almost concealed. Shoots are relatively weak and may bend to the ground under the weight of the flowers. Susceptible to black spot. (Oliver)

At introduction, Pat Austin represented a departure within the Austin range: copper, coral, and amber tones distinct from the usual pastel spectrum of English Roses. It has large cup-shaped flowers with a clear contrast between coral petals and their pale yellow reverse. It opens to a moderately double bloom, with red stamens visible in the centre and a pair of small petals wrapped around the heart. The orange fades to pink, and the yellow to cream. Blooms appear in clusters of 3–7, set against dark foliage, and the variety flowers early. Pat Austin is the wife of David Austin; their Albrighton garden is centred on her sculptures.
