More information

Pirkko Kahila discovered the roses in the early 1990s at the site of the Vihdist Olkkalan mansion on the former railway embankment, among nettles and raspberry bushes. Roses were not found anywhere else. In 2012 archaeologist Tuija Rankama found a church in the peat bogs of the former Veikkolan sanatorium. The villa of mountain councillor Arthur Selma Lagerlöf was built in Art Nouveau style in 1910. In 1929 it became a luxury sanatorium, with a gardener tending the garden for the first decades. The rose was most likely planted in the 1910s–1930s.

‘Olkkkala’ is a 2–2.5 m tall, erect bush. Requires a lot of space. Last year’s shoots are reddish brown; young ones light green, hairy, prickly; prickles are straight, of various sizes. Leaves small, dark, slightly shiny. Bright red buds. Inflorescences of 3–10 flowers that open sequentially, so the flowering time is long. Flowers are simple, 5–7 petals, 8–9 cm wide, bright pink, later becoming light lilac, with bright red veins, a pale centre, yellow stamens, and a strong fragrance. The large dark red fruits are yellow and red in September.
