More information
In cold climates, Old Port is cultivated as a purple floribunda and is especially popular in Germany. The blooms are dark purple with paler petal reverses, and the strong coloration is visible from a distance. Despite the depth of colour, the flowers remain conspicuous. In heat they quickly fade to a lighter purple, similar to some Gallic roses. The flower form recalls old-fashioned roses and presents more of its form when fully open than in bud. The foliage is dark and glossy, and the bush is low and compact.
The fragrant blooms of Old Port combine red and purple tones. The double flowers have 26–40 petals and a flat, old-style form. In hot climates the colour fades to a greyish tinge, and most suppliers recommend planting in semi-shade to help preserve the colouring. The foliage is matt and the bush is branched. In cold regions the variety is not very strong and performs better in temperate climates. Prevention of black spot is recommended.
