More information

Morden Ruby shares the same parentage as Adelaide Hoodless. The blooms are dark pink to crimson and double. Because it is a sport from a non-maple seedling, it can occasionally revert to the original form and produce non-maple flowers. On close inspection, the petals show numerous crimson dots on a deep pink background. Flowers are borne in clusters of 5–10 on long stems and last well both on the plant and when cut. The foliage is glossy, dark green, and disease-resistant, though black spot may occur in damp conditions. It repeats well, with single blooms appearing between waves.

The growth habit is loose and requires frequent pruning. Susceptible to black spot. Hardy, but may freeze in severe winters.

Stems tend to splay; low spring pruning helps maintain shape. Susceptible to black spot.

The shrub is heavily in bloom in early summer, then flowers more lightly through the rest of summer. Blooms appear in clusters of 5–10; they are large (7.5 cm), densely mahogany in tone, ruby-red. The fragrance is light. The bush is spreading. The cultivar is suitable for exposed, cold, windy sites.
