More information
Mme Hardy is an example of an old-fashioned rose. The blooms have a distinct form and a light fragrance. Fully open flowers are pure white, while the buds show a pink flush. The outer petals curve slightly downward, surrounding a ring of short, wavy petals; the flower is flat, with a distinctive green button at the centre. Flowers appear in clusters of 3–5, sometimes singly, and may be damaged by rain. The bush is vigorous, branched, with abundant bright green foliage and general disease resistance. Black spot may appear occasionally. The shoots are moderately prickly.
Officially classified as a Damask rose, though some experts note features of other roses in its appearance. Creamy or yellowish buds with pink streaks open into densely petalled flowers 6–8 cm in diameter. The flowers are cup-shaped at first, lightly scented, then become flatter, with a central button. Blooms once for 3–6 weeks. The bush is erect, with drooping shoots and light green foliage. When grown, it is advisable to plant to a support; otherwise the bush falls apart. Can be trained as a climbing rose. Disease resistance is high.
Described as white, but in fact the flowers are soft pink or cream, 5–7.5 cm in diameter, with a green button in the centre. The scent is lemon-like. The foliage is greyish or yellowish green. May be frosted in severe winters, but is generally the most winter-hardy of the Damask roses.
In particularly warm climates, the rose may not receive sufficient low temperatures to flower the following year. This Damask rose blooms in clusters of large, densely petalled, fragrant white flowers, with a green button in the centre. It is also noted for its hardiness.
