Mainzer Fastnacht, known under various names, is a widely distributed and well-known lilac rose. The flowers open slowly from large buds and maintain form when fully open. They typically appear singly on long, sturdy stems, are suitable for cutting, and have a long vase life. The plant shows vigorous, healthy growth. Often used in large group plantings; can be difficult to combine with other plants in mixed borders. Although winter-hardy, it performs best in hot climates.
The upright, strong-growing shrub reaches 75 cm in height. The flowers are large, silvery-lilac or lilac-purple, on long stems. The colour shifts bluer in sun and pinker in shade. It may be affected by black spot. Prefers light partial shade.
This rose has tall, slender violet-lilac buds and pale purple flowers with a strong fragrance. The variety is noted for adaptability and wide distribution, is ADR-certified, and can suffer from powdery mildew in wet summers.
