More information
Among Alba roses, this cultivar is widely known. In many gardens it persists for decades. It shows traits typical of the group: graceful bush shape, delicate coloration, a long flowering period, and a strong fragrance. The rose can reach 2 metres in height and 180 cm in width. The foliage is usually disease resistant, and the variety is quite winter hardy. Flowers appear in clusters of 3–5 and carry a pronounced scent. The flowering period, although once per year, lasts about 6 weeks. Maiden’s Blush is classified as a single-flowering European rose.
This is a large shrub, reaching 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide. Foliage is light bluish-green; the shoots are arching. Flowers are soft pink, sweetly scented, up to 7.5 cm. Blooms once, profusely. Tolerates poor soils. Suitable for hedges. After flowering, remove some of the old shoots and shorten young shoots by one third to encourage flowering the following year.
There are two forms of this popular rose. The more common is Maiden’s Blush Great; the less known is Maiden’s Blush Small. The only difference between these two forms is the size of the bush and the flowers. Approximately 500 years after it was bred, this variety remains in cultivation. The medium-sized bush, with stiff upright shoots and bluish foliage, is slightly susceptible to black spot but is otherwise disease resistant. Like many members of the Alba group, Maiden’s Blush is very winter-hardy.
Historians are not sure whether this rose, called Cuisse de Nymphe Emue, is French or English (from Kew); its name is Great Maiden’s Blush. It is one of the early Alba roses. The flowers are pale pink, fading to white at the edges, with a rich fragrance. Flowers are cup-shaped or globular, appearing in small clusters, rarely more than 5 per cluster. The bush is tall, with few thorns and pale bluish foliage with a grey reverse side. Hardy and winter-hardy. Can sometimes be affected by rust. Produces scions when grown on its own roots.
Flowers are light pink, double, numerous, very fragrant, abundantly covering robust bushes.
