More information

‘Lydia Freimane’ (synonym ‘Lidija Freimane’) is a Hybrid Rugosa rose bred by Roberts Abolins in Latvia at the selection farm ‘Iedzeni’ around 1965 and registered in 1978.

The shrub is dense, spreading, and generally upright, armed with thorns or prickles. Its height is about 150–200 cm (1.5–2.0 m). Foliage is dark green, slightly to semi-glossy, leathery, and consists of leaves that are larger than those of many other rose cultivars.

Flowers are large (about 8–11 cm in diameter), double/very double with approximately 19–27 petals. The color is deep to bright pink with violet or purple shading, often classed as medium pink, and the blooms fade to a lighter shade with age. They are produced singly or in small clusters (inflorescences of about 3–7 flowers) at the ends of the shoots. The rose has a strong fragrance. Flowering may occasionally repeat later in the season.

This cultivar is suitable for USDA hardiness zones 5b–9b, is considered very hardy, and has been reported as very disease resistant. Removal of spent blooms promotes further flowering into autumn.
