Lutin blooms are dark pink to pale crimson, fading to pink. Petals are pointed, often with a dark pink edge and a white center. Flowers appear in clusters of 3–15, opening into rosettes. The foliage is small and glossy. It has very few prickles. The plant is erect but forms a rounded shrub with equal height and width. In hot climates it reaches 1.5 metres, while in its native France it rarely exceeds half that size. It is widely grown in Australia, known as Shady Lady and recommended for mass plantings in shade. Performs better in full sun.
