More information

La Sevillana is a modern rose cultivar developed by Maison Meilland and used as a groundcover, landscape rose, and floribunda. It exists in both bush and climbing forms.

Bush form:

- Type/class: Various sources list it as a groundcover rose, floribunda, landscape rose, or modern shrub.

- Growth habit: Dense, broad, rounded, well-branched shrub up to about 1.1 m in height.

- Foliage: Bronze‑green; young shoots are dark red.

- Flowers:

- Color: Bright scarlet to dark red, with yellow at the base of the petals; the color is stable in heat.

- Form: Semi‑double with wavy petals.

- Fragrance: Slight to none, depending on source.

- Flowering: Abundant, continuous/repeat‑flowering through the season.

- Weather effects: Petal spotting may develop in rainy conditions.

- Fruit (hips): Form in autumn and can remain into winter if spent flowers are not removed.

- Maintenance: Can be trimmed with a hedge trimmer; deadheading favors repeat flowering over hip production.

- Health: Good disease resistance.

- Use: Suitable for hedges with continuous bloom, groundcover plantings, isolated specimens, and mixed plantings.

Sports and related forms:

- Grimpant La Sevillana (climbing sport):

- Type: Climbing rose.

- Color: Dark red.

- Fragrance: None.

- Flowering: Repeat‑flowering.

- Pink La Sevillana (pink sport):

- Type: Color sport with pink flowers; other characteristics similar to the original variety, unless otherwise specified.

Awards and performance:

- Awards: ADR certificate (1979) and “Golden Rose” (1980).

- Rootstock: In some climates it shows strong performance only when grafted onto robust, frost‑resistant rootstock; hedges from imported own‑root seedlings have not been successful in those conditions.
