Among AARS award-winning roses, Kaleidoscope is noted for colour transitions: blooms shift from greenish brown, coffee and yellow to grey-pink and lilac, with petals edged in crimson. Colour expression varies with weather and with the amount of direct sunlight each petal receives. Flowers form large clusters; buds are well-shaped and compact. Petal edges are notched. The shrub is very branched and thorny, with fine, glossy foliage and a spreading habit. Originally bred as a landscape rose, it is also used in mixed plantings and containers.
The name reflects continuous colour change. Small (about 7–8 cm), densely petalled blooms open from creamy, smoky pink buds, sometimes with a yellow tinge, and then shift to pink or, less often and only in cold weather, warm lavender on the outer petals, while the inner petals turn creamy coffee. With age, the pink tone becomes warmer and the coffee tone extends through the flower. The blooms are virtually scentless. Reports note abundant flowering, disease resistance (black spot is possible), and dark foliage.
Elongated orange‑pink buds open to densely petalled flowers with wavy petals, 5–7 cm in diameter. Copper‑yellow petals quickly develop a purplish‑pink edge that gradually covers the entire petal. Flowers appear in clusters, have no fragrance, and bloom profusely throughout the season. Foliage is bright green and shiny. The shrub is rounded and spreading. Suitable for borders; sometimes combined with yellow miniature roses such as the delicate yellow Yantai or the brighter Cal Poly, or with the green flowers of fragrant tobacco Lime Green. Disease resistance is described as good, though black spot may occasionally appear.
