More information
White terry (double) flowers with a yellow center. The white terry form has no Russian name; in England and Norway it is sold as Burnet 'Double White', in Sweden as 'Totenviksrose', in Denmark and Poland as 'Plena', and in Finland as 'Juhannusruusu'. The name Burnet 'Double White' refers to the resemblance of the leaves of roses (Burnet Rosae and several of its varieties) to the leaves of the Burnet plant, the medicinal bloodroot. One historical name of the plant—the ancestral rose—is "Small burnet-leaved Rose."
In Finland it is regarded as one of the national symbols and is associated with Juhannus (Ivan Kupala, the day of the summer solstice). A group of outwardly similar forms exists; whether they are descendants of 'Plena' is an open question. The terry forms did not arise in a single place or time; in Scotland they were present before 1750.
