More information

Ingrid Bergman’s classic red blooms are cultivated worldwide. The petals open in a spiral from long, elegant buds that are almost black. They are dark red, the same non-fading shade on both sides—no white center, no white streaks—uniform deep red. Flowers usually appear singly, suitable both for cutting and for garden display. Blooms are densely petalled and handle rain very well. The shrub is strong, stiff, compact, with glossy, lacquer-like foliage and crimson new growth. Noted for high disease resistance and unusually good winter hardiness for a hybrid tea rose.

The coloration is traditionally associated with love: petals are deep red and velvety. Commonly given in dozens. The color holds well, with some fragility only in hot climates; in rainy weather, spots may form on the petals. Avoid extremes: the rose does not tolerate very hot sun or heavy shade. The blooms are large with medium substance; the pointed bud maintains its classic outline for several days. With 45 petals, the flower takes a few days to open fully; the diameter of the fully open bloom can exceed 10 cm. It has a noticeable, memorable fragrance. Flowers are more often solitary; when formed in tasselled inflorescences, the first bloom is the largest, the others smaller and accompanying. Flowering is repeat, producing an extended display each year, suitable both as a garden plant and as cut flowers. Plants are vigorous, with many thick basal stems. The bush becomes spreading, reaching about 1.2 m in height and about 0.75 cm in width. Avoid extremes: it dislikes overly hot sun and deep shade. Young red foliage matures to dark green; leaves are abundant and glossy. May be mildly affected by black spot late in the season.
