More information
This hybrid Kordesii is among the taller cultivars in the Explorer series. Henry Kelsey shows lower winter hardiness and lower resistance to black spot than some Explorer roses, but its blooms are bright red with a prominent cluster of golden stamens in the center. The flowers are semi-double, cup-shaped, borne in medium clusters (usually 5–15). The first flush is heavy, followed by lighter waves until frost. The foliage is dark green and glossy. In warmer climates it grows to 4 m and can be trained as a climbing rose.
This semi-climber reaches about 3 m and is winter-hardy without protection in zone 4. Flowers are medium-sized (6–7 cm), semi-double, bright red fading to bright pink, revealing the center. They appear in clusters of 10–20 throughout summer and autumn. Generally disease resistant, but sometimes susceptible to black spot. The shrub is very prickly.
This variety produces long, arching canes that can be tied and used as a climbing rose. If left untrained, Henry Kelsey forms a low, spreading, slightly weeping shrub. A well-developed plant makes very long shoots that in a couple of years will reach the top of an arch or trellis. Scarlet petals with golden stamens are characteristic. Large clusters open from early summer until the first frost. The intense red color fades to dark pink over time, and the petals drop cleanly. The variety is highly resistant to powdery mildew. It can remain on a trellis in zones 4 and 5 without serious frost damage. Easily propagated by cuttings.
Winter-hardy to −26 C without shelter.
A winter-hardy rose of the Canadian Explorer series, it blooms abundantly in early summer with clusters of bright red semi-double flowers with bright golden stamens and a spicy fragrance. The plant rests in July, with a profuse re-bloom in early autumn. Somewhat susceptible to black spot; otherwise disease resistant.
