More information

Among variegated roses, three notable bicolours are Harlekin, Antike 89, and Handel. Harlekin bears flowers with a bright crimson border on a creamy white or pale pink background; the colour holds until the petals drop. The blooms are large, cup-shaped, produced singly or in clusters of up to 5, and the flowering is very abundant. The flowers are very double and bow slightly under their own weight, a feature suited to a pleached rose. The shrub is branched, with dark green, glossy, disease-resistant foliage, and is seldom without flowers.

Buds are oval. Flowers are pale pink to white; sometimes half the bloom is red; they are cup-shaped, loose, small (7–9 cm), densely waved (50–70 petals), fragrant, and borne in large, dense inflorescences of up to 5. Leaves are small, dark green, leathery, shiny. Spines are small. Shrubs are dense, up to 3 m tall. Flowering is abundant, lasting 30 days. Does not bear fruit. Winter-resistant. Resistant to fungal diseases. For vertical landscaping and bush culture.
