More information
Known as the “yellow rose of Texas,” this rose was bred in New York by George Harrison. The exact parentage of the hybrid is unknown. It bears very spiny shoots, fine grey-green foliage, and black fruits reminiscent of Rosa spinosissima, while the flower colour is most likely inherited from Rosa foetida. The flowers are bright, pure yellow, slightly paler at the edges, with stamens of the same bright hue. Blooms are cup-shaped. The hybrid is very hardy. It tolerates poor soils, both dry and damp, as well as heat and cold. It grows well in the United States from Texas to Alaska. It is susceptible to black spot, but continues to grow and bloom despite infection. It first forms a dense bush and later produces long, arching shoots. Once-blooming.
Bred in New York, this hybrid Rosa foetida was carried by settlers to their gardens, where it persisted with little or no care. Flowers are cup-shaped, semi-double, 5–6 cm in diameter. Fragrance ranges from moderate to intense, with widely varying reported responses. It blooms for several weeks in early summer. Black fruits ripen in late summer. The foliage is fine, light green. The bush is erect, fountain-shaped. Susceptible to black spot, with severity often limited.
Among rose colours, yellow is the most difficult to achieve when developing a winter-hardy variety in northern regions. Harison’s Yellow combines bright yellow colouring with considerable winter hardiness. It blooms early. Numerous small buds open into sulphur-yellow flowers. Shoots become arching, forming drooping sprays of bright yellow. The bloom period is brief, lasting only a couple of weeks.
