More information

Often cited as a precursor to English roses. Orange buds open to full, pink blooms with a deeper apricot‑pink reverse. They fade quickly to creamy white, especially along the edges; combined with deeper tones in the center. Color is strongest in cooler climates and in autumn. Blooms are typically rosette-shaped, sometimes with a button eye, and are numerous. They appear singly or in clusters of up to 7 on a graceful, compact shrub. Foliage is dark and generally healthy, though black spot may occur in autumn. Repeat-flowering. Requires only light pruning and responds well to watering and fertilizing.

Bred in 1909 and still commonly available on the market. Old-style flowers. Flowers freely over a prolonged season. Reaches about 1 metre in height and 120 cm in width. Fragrant.

Low, upright shrub covered with densely waved, pale pink blooms that fade to creamy white. Relatively slow-growing; may take a few years to reach mature performance. (Oliver)

A compact shrub up to 70 cm in height and width. Blooms in clusters of full, creamy-white flowers with soft pink and peach highlights. Lightly fragrant. The shrub is branched and erect, with matte dark green foliage.

Although Gruss an Aachen resembles an old rose, it is a comparatively modern cultivar. This floribunda bears full, cup-shaped blooms about 7–8 cm in diameter that later open into almost flat rosettes. Young flowers are soft pink or peach, sometimes with a yellow tint, fading to cream; in strong sun they can become almost white. Blooms in early summer, with repeated and fairly abundant waves through autumn. The shrub is branched and upright. Often planted in groups of 3 or more. In hot climates it prefers shade during the hottest hours. Powdery mildew, black spot, or rust may appear, though plants seldom suffer much from these diseases.

Shade-tolerant variety.
