More information

Compared with ‘Champlain’, ‘George Vancouver’ shows greater winter hardiness and higher disease resistance. Blooms open from crimson buds; the flowers are red, later fading to dark pink. They appear singly or in small clusters (up to 7), followed by red hips. ‘George Vancouver’ forms a compact, upright shrub; in hot climates the habit becomes more spreading. The foliage is dark and glossy; in cold regions it shows minimal susceptibility to fungal diseases, while in mild climates it is affected by black spot. The shrub is vigorous and prickly. The first summer flush is abundant, followed by a prolonged but lighter repeat.

This rose from the Explorer Series is among the most winter-hardy roses that are not rugosa hybrids. Plants can withstand up to -35C without visible damage. The shrub is rounded and compact, with dark green, glossy foliage; the shoots are dark red. It blooms in early summer and continues into autumn. Flowers are borne in clusters. Semi-double blooms are symmetrical in form. Buds are orange-red, fading to dark pink. Petals drop cleanly. Readily propagated from cuttings.
