More information

Fruhling roses are early-flowering shrubs with drooping, arching shoots. In Germany, they finish blooming well before other roses open in summer; all Fruhling roses are spring-flowering. Buds show orange speckles, and the blooms open into large, saucer-shaped, light yellow flowers that fade to cream at the edges as they age, with a brighter center and prominent dark stamens. Flowers usually appear singly, sometimes in short clusters, at the ends of the previous year’s long, bent shoots, often in numbers that cause the branches to arch. This rose is winter-hardy and performs best in cool climates, as the yellow petals burn out quickly in strong sun. Foliage is small, pale green, with some susceptibility to black spot; shoots are prickly. Later, small black hips may form.

Large semi-double flowers of light yellow color; on some soils a pink tinge may appear. The shrub is strong and tall; as it matures, branches bend toward the ground. Shoot coloration corresponds to the flower tone. The variety roots poorly from cuttings and is more often propagated by grafting. It grows even in poor, dry soils.

Hybrid spinosissima. Reddish buds open into semi-double, fragrant flowers. Prefer on own roots; grafted bushes often freeze and die in winter. The flowers are golden yellow, simple, large, appearing in late May. Shrubs are vigorous (up to 2.5 m), dense, and widely spreading. Shade-tolerant variety.
