More information

Forth of July is a red-and-white striped, variegated climbing rose that flowers in tassel-like clusters. It was the first pleached rose to receive the AARS award from the American Rosewood Growers Society. Blooms open crimson-pink and then weather to red-and-white. The striping varies widely—some blooms are nearly solid red, others largely white. Bright yellow central stamens are conspicuous, and each bloom holds without fading for an extended period. The colored striping dominates the presentation, while the flowers are small and have a relatively low petal count. Inflorescences carry 5–20 flowers, with the first bloom typically the largest in the cluster. Foliage is clean, fine-textured, and dark. The variety is very prickly, somewhat untidy in habit, and fast-growing.

Elongated reddish buds open to semi-double flowers 5–10 cm in diameter, with golden stamens surrounded by white petals marked with bright red spots and stripes. The flowers have a sweet fragrance. Bloom is very abundant in early summer, followed by another abundant wave in autumn. Shoots are moderately spiny, and the foliage is glossy, bright green. The shrub is medium in height, reaching 3–3.5 m. Can be used alone or paired with white or red roses. Often used against light or dark walls; brick walls are generally avoided. Shows disease resistance; nonetheless, undertake preventive treatments against black spot.
