Selected by Eduard Regel in 1879 from seedlings of the Siberian variety of rugosa, "Queen of the North" remains, alongside few other roses, present there as a cultivar in parks in the northernmost parts of Europe, Canada, and Alaska. Dark double flowers with fragrance appear on the shrub throughout the summer, and in autumn the foliage shows notable seasonal coloration.
