More information
Elmshorn is a vigorous shrub suitable for sites where a strong mass effect is required at a distance, and it also functions as a long-flowering specimen and in a mixed border. The blooms open pale crimson, then become a deep pink, fading to pale pink at the edges in heat. They are cup-shaped with numerous short petals, later turning pompon-shaped, and they drop their petals cleanly after flowering. Produced in upright, loose sprays of 10–20. Foliage is dark and glossy; the plant is very strong-growing. As a shrub it reaches about 2 m; with hard pruning it can be kept to 1.5 m. Trained as a climber it can reach up to 5 m. Flowers profusely, followed by very heavy repeat blooms in autumn.
Flowers are present throughout the season. Elongated buds open to double, cup-shaped rosettes 3–4 cm across, in a rich dark pink that fades to pink. The blooms are small but borne in large clusters, forming a display from early summer until frost. The fragrance is light, reminiscent of apples. The bush is upright, moderately prickly; shoots may arch. Foliage is abundant, light green, shiny, slightly wrinkled. Reaches 120–150 cm in height and about the same in width. Suitable for solitary planting, groups, or hedges. Due to its abundant flowering, it is also appropriate for mixed borders. Combine with soft yellow or blue perennials, or contrast with brighter golden and purple tones. Shows high disease resistance.
Buds are oval. Flowers are dense pink, non-persistent, pompon-shaped, small (4 cm), double (48 petals), weakly inflorescent, in inflorescences up to 40. Leaves are glossy, slightly wrinkled. Spines are large and frequent. Shrubs up to 1.5 m tall, broad, spreading. Flowering is abundant, with repeats. Slightly affected by powdery mildew. For group plantings.
