More information
Recent releases in the Explorer series, such as De Montarville, differ from older cultivars in the same series by exhibiting greater disease resistance and a much longer bloom period. De Montarville produces crimson buds and dark pink flowers with dense petals that tolerate rain. The blooms open into flat, twisted rosettes reminiscent of camellias, with paler inner petals and a central cluster of stamens. Flowers appear usually singly, sometimes in small clusters, and continue until the first frost. The foliage is dark, finely textured, and disease resistant. The shrub is compact, branching, and bears few prickles. In warm climates it can reach 2 m.
