More information

The flowers of Criterion are light crimson or cherry-colored and do not fade in sun. Petals are broad. Blooms form on long shoots and open quickly. When fully open, they retain a dense central mass of petals. Usually borne singly. The shrub is vigorous and branched; foliage is large and healthy. Black spot may appear at the end of the season. Flowering is almost continuous. The variety is popular in France, where a pleached form is also cultivated and sold.

Buds are pointed. Flowers are pinkish-red, persistent, of regular form, large (9–10 cm), double (30 petals), fragrant, mostly solitary, carried on sturdy pedicels. Leaves are medium-sized, dark green, glossy. Thorns are moderate. Shrubs are tall (80–100 cm), upright. Flowering is abundant. Slight susceptibility to powdery mildew. Winter-hardy. Suitable for groups and for cutting. Introduced at GBS in 1979
