More information

Dr. Müller named this Rugosa rose after the Swiss poet who had died the year before. ‘Conrad Ferdinand Meyer’ forms a tall shrub with a denuded base, or can be grown as a low, bent/pegged rose; it responds well to bending of shoots, then flowering along the full length of the canes. Buds are high-centered. Flowers are large, densely petalled, with petal edges slightly recurved. Color is silvery pink with a darker reverse; blooms can be flat at times; early to bloom. Fragrance is strong and sweet. Re-flowering is moderate; deadheading stimulates it. The shrub is very vigorous, fast-growing, and prickly, with stiff, pale foliage typical of Rugosa hybrids, contrasting with the flowers. David Austin used it extensively in his breeding program. Susceptible to powdery mildew.

Suitable for the back of a border; arching, drooping, spiny shoots are studded with large flowers about 10 cm in diameter with a pronounced fragrance. Foliage is large, grey-green. Typically blooms in two waves, in early summer and then early autumn, with the second flush more abundant. With light pruning it develops into a large bush. Lower pruning produces larger flowers.

This shrub can reach up to 3 m in width and carries large, silvery-pink flowers with a strong fragrance. Foliage is dark green; shoots are thick and spiny; the bush reaches 2.5 m in height. It blooms abundantly in early summer, followed by a repeat flush in autumn. Hardy, though it can be damaged by rust.

Silver pink; well-shaped; large (9–10 cm), double (45 petals), very fragrant; borne in clusters of up to 5–7. Leaves are large, leathery. Spines are very frequent, thin, hook-shaped. Shrubs are upright, tall (over 2 m), with thick, stiff shoots. Flowering is mostly moderate, as it freezes severely; recurrent. In cultivation the variety is challenging due to the difficulty of winter insulation.

Shade-tolerant variety.
