More information
One of the earliest roses of domestic breeding. It was originally bred by N.A. Hartvis as a Tea rose, but that form was not retained; the cultivar is now known in a climbing form. The blooms are large, with a Tea rose, quartered, old-rose type shape. It flowers in clusters throughout the season. The variety has a tea-rose fragrance.
It was recorded in the catalogue of N.A. Hartvis and listed in the international catalogues of Singer (1885) and Eger (1936, 1960). The shrub reaches up to 3 m in height with a vigorous growth habit. Buds are elongated, golden-yellow with a reddish tint. Flowers are large, full (double), copper-yellow with red petal margins, and fragrant. Flowering begins early and continues for an extended period. A surviving specimen remains on the South Coast in front of the veranda of the Shuvalov building of the Vorontsov Palace.
Rose ‘Comtesse Woronzow’ is derived from an old Tea rose (Rosa odoratissima). The bloom shows a deep pink color, a regular shape, and a fuller corolla.
