More information
Cocktail is a branching variegated rose suited to small gardens. At opening, the flowers are radiant crimson with a yellow center. The yellow extends from the petal base to the reverse but fades quickly, so for most of the flowering period the blooms appear crimson and white. Rain marks the petals, though they hold well when cut. Clusters of 20–40 blooms appear on long, slender, upright shoots. The shrub is freely branching, with glossy foliage, and is very prickly. Flowering is abundant, with successive flushes that are nearly continuous. It tolerates poor soils and grows well near buildings; it can be grown as a free-standing shrub or trained to an arch so that sunlight filters through the flowers.
On this shrub rose, the unopened flowers are not large but show strong coloration. The blooms are carried in large clusters, unbranched, slightly cupped, 5–6 cm across. Initially scarlet with a yellow eye and a golden tuft of stamens, the color shifts as the scarlet deepens to crimson and the yellow pales to cream. The scent is light and spicy. Flowering is very heavy in early summer, with abundant repeat flushes to frost. Shoots are spiny; the foliage is leathery, glossy, bright green with a red cast. The shrub reaches 120–150 cm and can be planted in groups or as a hedge. Trained as a low pleached rose on a pole or obelisk, it reaches 180–200 cm. Shows disease resistance.
Bright, unbrushed red flowers with a delicate yellow center and golden stamens are borne in large, upward-facing clusters. The blooms are faintly fragrant, accompanied by dark green glossy foliage. Shoots are red-brown. Flowering is almost continuous through the season. Tolerates poor soils.
