Introduced to mark the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s 1492 voyage to America. Blooms are scarlet, with yellow accents on the reverse of the petals. Petals are very broad. Flowers show the classic hybrid tea form, but typically appear in clusters of 3–7, with solitary blooms only rarely. Foliage is large, glossy, dark green. The bush is very thorny and vigorous, and in hot climates can reach 2 m.
