More information
Chevy Chase is a variegated rose. It is among the few cultivars derived from Rosa soulieana, though the influence of that species is not readily evident. DNA analyses clarify this point: they indicate that in at least 15% of varieties the recorded parentage is incorrect. Chevy Chase produces densely filled blooms; they retain their color for a long period before shifting to cherry red. Each flower forms a flat rosette. Blooms appear in large numbers, borne in clusters of 10–20, with dark coloration. The foliage is pale green, wrinkled, and shows higher disease resistance than other popular ramblers such as ‘Turner’s Crimson Rambler’ or ‘Excelsa’. Growth vigor is medium, and the plant may take a few years to reach full vigor, after which the shrub attains a large size.
