More information

Charlotte resembles its parent, Graham Thomas, but the blooms are a paler yellow and notably more cup-shaped. The plant flowers very freely. Strong tea-rose fragrance.

Charlotte is a Graham Thomas seedling with lighter-colored flowers. At close range, each bloom forms a sphere of small bright yellow inner petals surrounded by flatter, pale yellow outer petals; the most distinctive features are more apparent nearby than from a distance. The color fades to lemon yellow at the center and to cream, sometimes white, at the edges. In hot climates, semi-shade helps the flowers hold their color longer. The reverse of the petals is slightly lighter. Blooms appear singly or in clusters of up to 5. Foliage is bright, pale green, and large. The shrub is branched and upright. It flowers in waves; light pruning between flushes can increase bloom and maintain a neat outline. May require some protection against powdery mildew and black spot.

A hardy, vigorous rose with a delicate tea-rose fragrance. Compared with Graham Thomas, disease resistance is much higher, and the bush is more compact and neatly shaped. Charlotte is also more winter-hardy.

This English yellow rose shows uniform coloration and bears densely petalled, old-fashioned-style blooms on a relatively compact shrub. Rounded, pink-yellow buds open to cup-shaped, double flowers about 10 cm across, light yellow with a brighter center and nearly creamy edges. The flowers are sweet-scented and borne in small clusters. Bloom is abundant in early summer, followed by moderate repeat for the remainder of the season. The shrub is branched, reaching 90–120 cm in height and 100–150 cm in width. Suitable for mixed borders, including combinations with blue Echinops ritro or Nepeta spp., or with purple lavender and platycodon. The variety is disease resistant.
