More information

Brother Cadfael bears some of the largest blooms among English roses. The flowers are deeply cup-shaped, with inward-curving petals, and are deep pink. Despite their large size, the blooms hold their form and remain presentable for an extended period. The fragrance is strong. The shrub forms a regular framework. Like Abraham Darby, Brother Cadfael can be used as a centerpiece in plantings.

The flowers are very densely petaled, cup-shaped; later the outer petals reflex downward. They appear singly or in clusters of up to 5 on a stiff, upright bush. Pedicels are short, and the blooms are set within the foliage, as is typical of Portland roses. Brother Cadfael has almost no thorns. The bush is vigorous and fast-growing, but sometimes reluctant to re-bloom.

The flowers are carried upright on the branching bush (they do not droop). In the second wave of flowering they are more open and shallower. The scent is strongly of rose oil.
